East Carolina University named Sam Saunders director of technology for athletics in January of 2015.
No stranger to Pirate Athletics after assisting as a contracted camera operator at sporting events since 2010, Saunders now handles the day-to-day responsibilities related to all computer and technical support initiatives.
Saunders had been employed by the university for 10 years prior to his transfer into athletics, including the last seven as a broadcast and emerging media specialist in the information technology and computer science (ITCS) department. His responsibilities included managing, coordinating and scheduling the use of computers and equipment for the completion of video projects.
From 2006-07, Saunders worked as a support technician with East Carolina's IT department, training staff and students on proper usage of computers and technologies and managing the installation of work stations within Laupus Library. His initial stint at ECU began in 2005 as a computer lab manager where he oversaw more than 60 computer lab and five student workers on a daily basis, while implementing statistical tracking software that generated usage statistics.
Saunders earned his bachelor's degree with honors in education with an emphasis in IT from East Carolina in 2005. He is also affiliated with the Kappa Delta Phi Honor Society.
