ECU Volleyball Gets Bullied By South Florida
October 04, 2002 | Volleyball
South Florida held ECU to under 15 points in the first two games of the match, winning by scores of 30-13 and 30-12. The Pirates broke 20 points in the third and final game, falling 30-21.
Contributing to ECU's dismal point total was their hitting percentage, which was -.053 for the match, the lowest of a USF opponent this season, after a .033 performance in the second game and a -.300 one in the third. Adding insult to injury, USF finished the match with a .500 percentage, including .593 in the first game.
The Bulls only allowed the Pirates to play with them through the first five points of the first game before pulling away and finally closing the game with 10-1 run and never looking back. USF put on a hitting clinic for the evening, led by senior Michelle Collier with 14 kills and a .565 hitting percentage and followed by sophomore Shameka Mitchell with seven kills and a .600 hitting percentage and junior Jenny Scholle with five kills and a match-high .500 hitting percentage. In addition, all of Scholle's kills came in the final game of the match.
USF out-blocked ECU, seven to two, led by freshman Corinne Walsh, who had five block assists and a block solo. The Bulls also tallied 10 aces with senior Jolene Patton leading the way with three.
The Pirates were led by Robyn Drewes, who had 10 kills on the evening, while freshman Pam Ferris contributed six more.
East Carolina will face UAB tomorrow night at 8:30 p.m. Eastern at Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Ala.
