Jackson Paces Lady Pirates to Win Over Camels
January 14, 2003 | Women's Basketball
GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Jennifer Jackson scored 17 points to lead East Carolina to a 72-45 romp over visiting Campbell in a non-conference women's basketball game Tuesday night at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
The Lady Pirates (8-6) led by 10, 31-21, at halftime, but shot a blistering 59 percent from the floor in the second half to blow the game open.
Katie Cloud (12 points) and Courtney Willis (10 points) were the other Lady Pirates to score in double digits.
Campbell (5-7) started the scoring just 36 seconds into the game on a layup by LaTisha Jackson. The two teams switched leads for the first five minutes of the game until Jessica Stanley hit a free throw to put the Camels up by one, a lead which they would add to and keep until the 2:53 mark of the half. Campbell would go up by as much as five on two separate occasions in the first half.
At 6:18 of the first, Campbell hit its last two points of the period on a free throw by Patterson. East Carolina would go on a 28-1 scoring run which lasted into the second half.
Jennifer Jackson, number 33 for the Pirates, hit the first basket to open the second half, scoring the 33rd point for the Pirates for the fifth time this season. East Carolina continued adding points to its lead, and played well defensively, allowing Campbell only 24 points compared to ECU's 41.
"We didn't come out ready to play," ECU coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener said of the Pirates' slow start this evening. "It's something that we've got to adjust and fix. The problem offensively was we were timid. We played too laid back against a pressing team."
Kendra Danman was the leading scorer for Campbell with 11 points on the evening.
ECU will host Charlotte on Sunday, Jan. 19, at 2 p.m. in a rematch of the two teams' Conference USA opener, won by Charlotte, 83-57, last Friday night.
