Pirates' Shooting Goes Stone Cold at DePaul
January 19, 2003 | Men's Basketball
CHICAGO (AP) -- On a day when a 38 percent shooting margin from the field was good enough to win, Marlon Brooks' 11 points were enough to lead DePaul to a 55-42 victory over East Carolina.
Brooks came off the bench to hit three of five shots from the field and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
''This was my best game this season,'' Brooks said.
As cold as they were from the field, the Blue Demons (10-4, 2-1) made good use of the charity stripe, connecting on 19 of 24 shots overall, including 14 of 17 in the last 12:55 to clinch the game.
East Carolina (10-5, 1-3) shot almost 31 percent from the field for the game. The Pirates didn't hit a shot from the field in the last 7:14 of the game. This was after hitting their last shot from the field in the first half with 9:01 remaining.
In that first-half stretch, East Carolina had 10 possessions, including one five-shot possession, and attempted 16 shots.
Gabriel Mikulus led the Pirates with 15 points.
''We just didn't put the ball in the basket. We had a lot of opportunities around the basket all night. We just didn't put the ball in the hole,'' East Carolina head coach Bill Herrion said.
The victory gives DePaul one more win than it had all of last season. It also gives the Blue Demons two victories in the their first three conference games, matching their conference victory total from last season in 16 conference games.
