Temperatures for the afternoon practice were in the lower 30s and falling as the threat of possible wintry weather loomed for later in the evening.
"The guys down south that we're going to be playing later are down there in 70-degree weather right now, but hey, this is what we've got and we'll deal with it," senior right-hander Davey Penny said. "I'm as excited about this season as any in my four years here. We've got a hard-working bunch of guys that you can't keep away from the ball park. They'd rather be here right now than anywhere else, no matter what the conditions are."
The Pirates are one of just 12 teams in NCAA Division I to win 40 or more games in each of the past four seasons. To continue that streak, Mazey will rely on 21 returning lettermen, including four returning position starters and 10 experienced pitchers.
