
Pirate Women Look to Maintain Recent Success

This Monday, January 6, the East Carolina women will host Gardner-Webb in a nonconference match-up. This season marks the third straight year the two teams have met. ECU leads the series 2-0. The game, which is slated for a 7 p.m. start, will be played at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
SCOUTING THE PIRATES
After scoring 59 points in the Pirates' last
three games, Jennifer Jackson has taken over
as the East Carolina scoring leader for the
2002-03 season. She is averaging 14.6 points
per game. Jackson is also leading the team in rebounds, with 8.3 boards per outing.
Courtney Willis and Tali Robich are also
averaging double-figures in scoring. Willis
has anaverage of 14.1 points per game, and
Robich is avaeraging 11.5.
The Lady Pirates have six wins on the year, with an overall record of 6-5. The six wins matches the total number of wins last year.
ECU has competed in three in-season tournaments this year. The Pirates were the champions of the U.S. Cellular Classic at East Carolina, and were runners-up in the UNCG Marriot Classic and the Atlanta NW Marriott Classic.
The Pirates are shooting 42.4 percent from the field this season, and 66.3 percent from the free throw line.
In eight of the Pirates' 11 games this season, three or more players have posted double-figure points. The only three games in which three players didn't hit double-figured scoring were the Duke, North Carolina A&T, and Florida Atlantic games.
In the games against Bethune-Cookman and Alabama, every participating player scored at least two points. Against Bethune- Cookman and North Carolina A&T every participating player had at least one rebound.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Gardner-Webb is returning three starters
and five lettermen from last year's 3-24
squad. The Bulldogs competed as an
independant in 2001-02, but have joined the
Atlantic Sun Conference for the 2002-03
season.
This year the Bulldogs are 1-8, their lone win coming against Winthrop 54-51 on December 3. GWU has competed against two C-USA teams this season, Charlotte and Saint Louis, falling to both teams by scores of 93- 58 and 105-54 respectively.
Leading the way for Gardner-Webb is Katie Gravel, averaging 11.4 points per game. Casey Collins (10.3) and Shameka Smith (10.0) are also averaging double figures for GWU.
Brooke Anderson leads the team in rebounding, with an average of 8.0 boards per game.
The Bulldogs are under the direction of first year head coach Barry Street, who has a 1-8 record at GWU and a career record of 57- 36.
