Dougherty, Jean Earn Honorable Mention on Freshman All-America Team
December 15, 2003 | Football
Dougherty, a redshirt freshman from Orlando, Fla., enjoyed the finest rookie season ever by a Pirate punter as he averaged 44.5 yards per punt, 10th-best in the nation. His average was the third-best among the country's freshmen and was the third-highest season punting average in ECU history. His distance, hangtime, and accuracy helped the Pirates' coverage unit post a net punting average of 43.9, which broke the school record and ranked sixth nationally.
Jean, a true freshman from Fort Pierce, Fla., made an immediate impact in the Pirate secondary as he recorded two interceptions--including one for a touchdown, forced and recovered two fumbles, and ranked sixth on the team in tackles with 50. He led the Pirates with nine pass breakups.
Both Jean and Dougherty were Conference USA All-Freshman selections.
