GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Senior right-handed pitcher Davey Penny tossed his first complete game since his sophomore year to lead East Carolina to a 5-2 victory over Cincinnati in Conference USA baseball action here Friday night. Penny scattered seven hits over nine complete innings, struck out seven and allowed just two unearned runs to claim his third win of the season. He has not allowed an earned run in 30 consecutive innings.
"Anytime during a conference series, you can get a complete game in the first game it gives everybody a big lift, especially the pitchers in the bullpen," stated Pirate head coach Randy Mazey. "Davey was simply outstanding on the mound tonight."
John Poppert gave East Carolina (17-9-1, 5-2 CUSA) a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the third with a line drive home run that just cleared the left field fence.
Neither team pushed a run across in the fourth or fifth inning, but Cincinnati (7-16, 1-6 CUSA) broke through with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth. Brad Schutz reached on an error to leadoff the frame and later scored on a ground out. With two outs in the inning, UC tacked on an additional run as Drew Saylor singled into the right field corner to plate Dorrmann, who singled following the error.
Sophomore Darryl Lawhorn wasted little time putting the Pirates back on top in the bottom of the inning, as he hit a two-run home run over the scoreboard in right-center field, his seventh of the season. Jamie Paige drove in two runs in the seventh with a two-run double to center field.
The Bearcats put a runner on in the eighth and ninth, but neither runner reached second base.
Ryan Jones and Luke Cherry each collected two hits for the Pirates as Jones extended his hitting streak to eight consecutive games.
B.J. Borsa (2-4) tossed a complete game for the Bearcats, giving up nine hits with one walk and a pair of strikeouts.
