Men's Hoops Signs Mike Cook to Letter of Intent
April 16, 2003 | Men's Basketball
"We're very happy to get Mike Cook," said Herrion. "He's is someone we've wanted since he visited here officially back in October. He is a Philadelphia kid with great size and can really score a lot of different ways. He has a very big body for a guard and will be a welcome addition on the perimeter."
Prior to attending the New Hampshire preparatory school this past season, where he averaged 28 points and 12 rebounds, Cook played his high school basketball at Friends Central, just outside of Philadelphia.
A four-year starter and all-conference player at Friends Central, Cook tallied over 1,800 points during his career and left as the school's all-time leading scorer. Cook is one of four players from Friends Central to receive a Division I scholarship in the past few years including, Hakim Warrick (Syracuse) and Mustafa Shakur (Arizona).
As a senior, he earned conference player-of-the-year honors, averaging 22 points, seven rebounds and three assists per game leading his team to its second consecutive conference championship. Cook also received Team MVP honors as a junior and senior.
Cook played on Larry Waiters' Positive Image AAU team in Philadelphia. Waiters also coached San Antonio Spur's forward Malik Rose, who played for Herrion at Drexel.
Ranked as the 30th best fifth-year player by HoopScoopOnline.com, the online service wrote that Cook "has the natural talent, nose for the ball and Philadelphia toughness to help coach Bill Herrion's program take the next step in their quest to becoming one of the better teams in Conference USA."
