September 16, 2003 | Volleyball
Jaime Bevan added eight kills and four block assists while Sarah Vick chipped in seven kills for the Pirates. Katie Jannusch and Alexis Jones each added five kills. Freshman setter Heidi Krug directed the offense with 37 assists. East Carolina served well during the match, especially in game three, posting 14 service aces to just three for Campbell. Campbell outhit the Pirates in games one and two, .250-to-.200 and .414-to-.222, before ECU buckled down in the third and final game with a decisive .611-to-.111 attack percentage edge.
In game one, ECU jumped to a 9-5 lead before Campbell rallied behind freshman Brittany Rusin. Rusin served three consecutive service aces and eight total points to help the Camels take a 13-9 lead. Campbell stretched that lead to 17-11 on a kill by Cochrane. ECU's front line managed to pull the Pirates back to a 17-all tie as Erica Wilson, Katie Jannusch and Bevan all found their swings.
Two consecutive service aces from Alexis Jones was enough to give the Pirates back the lead for good. Campbell managed a four point rally in the latter stage of the game, but it was not enough as ECU won 30-23.
Game two featured back-and-forth sideouts through much of the early stage. Kills by Rachel Templin, Rusin, and Hensel gave Campbell a 19-16 advantage. The Pirates again mounted a rally as Ferris registered two kills to tie the game and then give ECU a 24-23 lead. Ferris served the final four points of the game, including back-to-back service aces, as the Pirates survived game two 30-26.
Ferris's serve again paced the Pirates in game three as she led ECU on a 9-0 run in which she tallied three aces. Campbell never recovered from the opening deficit as East Carolina won the final game handily. Freshman Abigail Parker's first career kill ended game three and the match for the Pirates.
Tammi Batson notched eight kills to lead the Camels. Junior Che Cochrane had six kills and junior Tawnee Hensel recorded 22 assists.
East Carolina travels to Conway, S.C. to compete in the Coastal Carolina Invitational where they will face Bethune-Cookman, Coastal Carolina, and Eastern Michigan.
