
Volleyball Holds Off UNCW

ECU pushed its record to 4-0 with the sweep of the Seahawks, who dropped to 1-3 on the season. Besides Bevan and Jannusch, sophomore outside hitter Pam Ferris had nine kills while sophomore Erica WIlson and junior Sarah Vick each collected seven kills for the Pirates. Junior setter Jessica Vick also added 25 assists in the match. Bea Gerevich paced the Seahawks with 15 kills and 15 assists. UNCW sophomore Lindsay Moffitt chipped in nine kills. ECU out-dug the Seahawks 53-45 led by Johanna Bertini's 10 digs.
ECU overcame a 12-10 deficit with an 8-1 run midway through the first game to take an 18-13 lead. Jannusch had two kills during the run. UNCW pulled within 22-21, but Jones and Wilson each added two kills and Bevan recorded a solo block to put the Pirates ahead 28-23. Sarah Vick's kill ended the game, 30-26.
In the second game, the Seahawks scored four straight points to take a 5-4 lead before the Pirates rallied down the stretch for a 30-28 decision. Wilson and Jannusch each had four kills in the game. UNCW built a 24-20 advantage in the third game behind Gerevich until Bevan, Vick and Jones combined to put the finishing touches on the win. With Ferris serving, ECU scored four straight points to tie the game behind two kills from Jones. After the Seahawks retook the lead, 25-24, kills by Sarah Vick and Bevan and a block by Vick and Bevan gave the Pirates a 27-25 advantage. Another kill by Bevan gave ECU a 29-28 lead. A Seahawk hitting error made for the final point of the match. Bevan recorded six kills in the final game.
The Pirates return to action Friday against Birmingham Southern at 5 p.m. in the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C. ECU will also face Furman and Gardner-Webb in the tournament.
