Mikulas Out for Remainder of Season
January 15, 2004 | Men's Basketball
Mikulas, a senior from Cordoba, Argentina, concludes his career as the school's 15th all-time leading scorer with 1,086 career points. He also finishes as the Pirates' career leader in free throws made (381) and ranks among the top four in both career field goal and free throw percentage as well as free throw attempts.
"This is a very unfortunate injury and a very unfortunate way for him to end his career," said Pirate head coach Bill Herrion. "Gabe has been a very consistent basketball player from day one and had an excellent career. I feel extremely bad for him."
As a freshman, Mikulas earned Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year and second-team all-conference accolades. He led ECU in scoring during the 2000-01 season averaging 15.0 points per game and finished fourth in the league. He also led the CAA in free throws made with 144.
Mikulas sat out the first 13 games of his sophomore campaign due to an NCAA rules infraction, but still finished second on the team in both scoring and rebounding and led the Pirates with a 12.1 ppg average in Conference USA games.
He finished second on the team in scoring as a junior, while once again having the highest free throw percentage on the squad. He became the first ECU basketball player to garner C-USA Player of the Week honors, leading the Pirates to a 73-70 upset victory over then-No. 9 Marquette, scoring 22 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Mikulas finished the season ranked among the top 10 in both field goal and free throw percentage in C-USA.
Mikulas had been the Pirates' second leading scorer and rebounder during the 2003-04 season.
