GREENVILLE, N.C. -- East Carolina University head women's basketball coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener announced today that Amanda Mills, a transfer from the University of Rhode Island, will join the Lady Pirates for the 2004-05 season.
Mills, a 6-4 center has enrolled at ECU for the spring semester. She will be able to practice with the Lady Pirates this spring, but will not be able to compete until the end of the 2004 fall semester.
As a freshman at Rhode Island in 2002-03, Mills averaged 4.4 points and 2.8 rebounds in just over 13 minutes per game. In her collegiate debut, she pulled down 10 rebounds against Maryland-Eastern Shore, and recorded her first career double-double (18 points and 14 rebounds) against Delaware State.
"Amanda helps fill a size concern we have on our team," said Baldwin-Tener. "She has good size, good touch around the basket and a good understanding of the game. The post position will be one of the huge holes we need to fill as we lose Courtney Willis and Angela Sye at the end of the season. She will be able to become familiar with our system this year, and be able to contribute at the end of fall semester next season."
Mills, a native of Hartland, Wisc. has three years of eligibilty remaining.
The signing of Mills brings the total number of 2004-05 signees to four. In November, coach Baldwin-Tener announced the signings of Shakira Clarke (Toronto, Ont.), Nicole Days (Burgaw, N.C.), and Raeshawn Mobley (Alexandria, Va). Due to her high school academic calender in Canada, Clarke is already active on ECU's roster and saw her first action for the Lady Pirates against Savannah State.
