
Volleyball Sweeps UAB to Win C-USA Opener, 3-0

Junior libero Johanna Bertini recorded 19 digs. Sophomore setter Heidi Krug ran the ECU offense finishing with 39 assists. The Lady Pirates out-blocked the Lady Blazers (1-10, 0-1 C-USA), 6-2. Nicole Bowland led UAB with nine kills while hitting .333. Isabel Oquendo and Cassi Ociesa each had seven kills.
Paige Howell and Mignon Dubenion each put down five kills for ECU. The Lady Pirates hit .306 and .303 in games one and two respectively before forcing UAB to hit .029 in the final game to claim the match.
Game one was tight early as the score was tied on seven occasions. East Carolina pulled ahead 10-9 and never relinquished the lead en route to a 30-22 win. ECU out hit UAB .306-.220 in the game.
The Pirates jumped out to a commanding 12-1 lead in game two, following an 11-0 ECU run. East Carolina once again out hit UAB .303-.088 as it took the game 30-20.
East Carolina never trailed in game three and won the contest 30-20.
East Carolina continues its C-USA road trip when the Lady Pirates travel to USF Sunday morning. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
