GREENVILLE, N.C. -- East Carolina head golf coach Kevin Williams announced today the signing of Markus Leandersonn of Nesbru, Norway to a National Letter of Intent for the 2005-06 season.
"We're very fortunate and extremely happy to sign Markus," said Williams. "We discovered him while recruiting another player for our program. He came very highly recommended by National Team coach Niklas Diethelm and his resume supports this recommendation. Markus has proven he can win golf tournaments. His winning attitude and work ethic will help him make an immediate impact on our program."
Leandersson, who holds the course record of 61 at Kjekstag GK, is the 2004 Norwegian Junior Champion and a member of the Norwegian National Junior Team. He finished second in the 2004 Gjensidige NOR Junior A-Tour Order of Merit.
In addition to his victory in the Norwegian Junior, he also captured the 2004 Gjensidige NOR Junior Tour A at Norefjell GK and qualified for the Swedish Telia Tour (Sweden's Professional Mini Tour).
"We will have four starters returning next year," said Williams. "So our plan with this recruiting class was to sign just one player, someone who could step in and make an immediate impact. I am confident that Markus is this kind of player."
Leandersson attends school at Norges Toppidrettsymnas, which is the Norwegian School for Top Athletes.
The Pirates (37-40-2) will begin Spring play on Feb. 14, when they travel to Orlando, Fla. to participate in the Rio Pinar-UCF Invitational.
