
Women's Hoops Runs Out Of Steam Against West Virginia

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The East Carolina Women's basketball team dropped its fourth straight game Tuesday afternoon at the hands of West Virginia, 76-54, inside Williams Arena.
ECU (2-8) took a five point lead, 32-27, into intermission after opening the game on a 17-3 run in the first seven minutes of action on a Soraya Hellaby 10-foot jumper. The Pirates would extend its lead to 16, 23-7, on a pair of Hellaby free throws with under nine minutes to play in the first half.
West Virginia would go on a run of its own after Olayinka Sanni connected on a pair of free throws at the 8:35 mark to spark an 18-9 Mountaineer run heading into the half.
To open the second half, West Virginia (9-0) carried over its momentum and used a run of 28-4 to blow past the Pirates, 55-36 and cruised to their ninth win of the season.
Senior Viola Cooper lead the Pirates in scoring with 13 points and fellow classmate Shanita Sutton netted 11 on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor. Sutton and junior LaToya Horton led the Pirates on the board, both bringing down six a piece as ECU out rebounded its eighth opponent of the season, 40-37.
For the Mountaineers, sophomore guard Meg Bulger led the team in scoring with 30 points, while Yelena Leuchanka netted 15 and Chakhia Cole scored 11.
The Pirates will take a 10-day break before playing five games in 11 days, with the first coming on Dec. 30 against former Colonial Athletic Association foe Virgisnia Commonwealth on Dec. 30 in Richmond, Va. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside ALLTEL Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
