
Baseball Completes Sweep of Delaware, 9-1

GREENVILLE, N.C.- Freshman Ricky Brooks threw five scoreless innings and sophomore second baseman Trevor Lawhorn went 3-for-5 with four RBI as East Carolina finished the three-game sweep of Delaware, 9-1, Sunday afternoon at Harrington Field. ECU (7-0) stayed perfect on the season while the Blue Hens fell to 0-4.
Brooks made his second career start, recorded four strikeouts and allowed only one hit before giving way to P.J. Connelly. Connelly gave up the earned run on three hits and two walks in 1.2 innings. Mark Minicozzi was 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Jake Smith was perfect at the plate going 2-for-2 with two RBI.
East Carolina jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Trevor Lawhorn's two-run homer, his third home run of the season, in the bottom of the first inning.
ECU batted around in the bottom of the second. Minicozzi singled to center field and John Poppert followed with a single up the middle. After Poppert was caught stealing, Ryan Jones walked giving the Pirates runners on the corner. Billy Richardson then singled in Minicozzi for a 3-0 Pirate lead. After Jamie Paige walked to load the bases, Trevor Lawhorn doubled to left center to make it, 5-0. Darryl Lawhorn was then intentionally walked loading the bases for the second time. Drew Costanzo's two-RBI single scored Trevor Lawhorn and Paige as the Pirates led 7-0.
Smith's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth scored Mike Grace, who reached on an error by the left fielder as ECU increased its lead to 8-0.
Delaware got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh. Todd Davison and Steve Van Note led off the seventh with back-to-back singles. After ECU recorded two outs, Kelly Buber walked loading the bases. Bryan Hagerich walked to score Van Note for the Blue Hens only run cutting the deficit to 8-1.
ECU added one more run in the bottom of the seventh. Minicozzi doubled and scored on Smith's RBI single putting the Pirates ahead, 9-1.
Chris Garrick (0-1) took the loss for the Blue Hens. Garrick gave up six earned runs on six hits in two innings. Jarame Beaupre relieved Garrick and struck out five in four innings.
ECU's Phillip Powell pitched 1.1 scoreless innings and Shane Mathews threw one scoreless inning for the Pirates.
Davison, Van Note, Hagerich and Brent Rogers each had one hit for the Blue Hens. East Carolina returns to action Tuesday when the Pirates host North Carolina A&T in their first of five games at home next week. ECU will host the first annual Keith LeClair Invitational next weekend welcoming No. 13 Clemson and Georigia Southern to Greenville.
