April 12, 2026 | Baseball
The Pirates found a little bit of trouble in the bottom of the first, being able to gain two outs quickly, but turned a little south with two singles in a row for the Green Wave. With runners on first and third, Tulane had a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Starter Ethan Norby was able to respond to the trouble with a strikeout to get out of the jam.Â
In the top of the second, Jack Herring was able to lead off the Pirates with a single in the 5-6 hole for the first hit for the Pirates on the night. Colby Wallace comes up to bat with a ground ball to first base, turning into a fielder's choice for an out at second, but is able to beat the throw to first. Matt Lashley is also gaining a base for the Pirates with a walk, putting two on. ECU was unable to solidify a run, leaving two on base in the second.Â
The Green Wave was able to respond with an outcome in the bottom of the second, having a deep double from Johnny Elliot to put a baserunner in scoring position with one out. Jack Johnson had the second double in the inning, able to score Elliot for the first run of the night. Tulane then had another single to score their second run of the night. Tulane ended the second inning leading 2-0.
The Pirates were able to gain some traction in the fourth, thanks to Herring with his second hit, with Wallace right behind him with a high single to put runners on first and third with one out. Lashley was able to answer the call for the second game in a row with an RBI single to the right side to score Herring and move Wallace to second. Austin Irby comes to the plate with two outs and is able to deliver an RBI single deep enough to center to bring Wallace home from second. The ballgame now tied in the fourth, 2-2.Â
The Pirates had some action back on base at the top of the fifth. With Braden Burress having a lead off hit, extending it to a double with his speed. Davin Whitaker was able to move Burress to third with a sacrifice bunt situation, but the Pirate were not able to bring him in on the inning.Â
With no dice from Tulane in the fifth, ECU is able to work something out in the sixth. With Lashley having a day with his second hit on the night, being able to hit through the shift that Tulane had. Pinch hitter Brayden Bachman saw some action as well, using his first at-bat since the Penn series to force a walk. Irby was able to follow on base with a four-pitch walk to load the bases. Michael Kalinich comes up to the plate with a new pitcher, able to blast the first pitch to deep left field to the first grand slam of his career, and his third on the year. The Pirates now have their first lead of the series, thanks to Kalinich, who leads 6-2 in the sixth.Â
Coming back up in the seventh, Herring has his third leadoff hit of the night with a fly ball in the right-center gap. Lashley back up to the plate to force his second walk of the night, now the Pirates with two baserunners with one out. But the Pirates are unable to gain more insurance through the seventh.
After no movement from the Green Wave since the second inning, Tulane is able to get a runner on third with one out due to a walk and a single to push him into scoring position. With a pitching change from the Pirates, Tulane hits a first-pitch, base-clearing double on two outs to close the gap to a one-run deficit, with the tying run on second. The Green Wave was able to hold on with two outs, hitting a single to right field to tie the game 6-6. The Pirates are able to end the seventh with a tie game and head to the eighth.
Kalinich leads off the eighth inning with a deep double into left center, putting himself in scoring position with no outs. Pinch runner Jeff Sabater was able to reach third on a deep fly ball caught for a runner on third, one out. Grady Lenahan was able to put himself on with a walk, for runners on first and third with two outs. Due to a passed ball, Sabater is able to get to home plate safely to put ECU up by one, 7-6. With herring forcing a walk, Colby Wallace is able to have a single to shallow right field to score two more runs for the Pirates on two outs. The Pirates now lead going into the bottom of the eighth, 9-6.
In the bottom of the ninth, Sean Jenkins shut the door on the Green Wave in 2.0 innings, gaining his sixth save of the season, with two strikeouts and only giving up two hits.Â
Kalinich led the Pirates on the night, going 2-for-4 with a monster grand slam to help the Pirates post nine runs, notching four RBI of his own. Herring posted three hits and two runs with one walk. Lashley went 2-for-3, with two go-ahead RBI singles in two games for the Pirates.Â
Joseph Webb garnered the win, with Norby having a show-out performance, going 6.2 innings, sitting down 11 batters with two walks in 105 pitches. Jenkins handled the save, pitching the eighth and ninth for the Pirates.Â
