East Carolina pounded out 14 hits led by Trevor Lawhorn going a career-high 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBI. Mark Minicozzi finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Ryan Jones, Darryl Lawhorn and Ryan Norwood each added two hits.
Mathews held the Tigers scoreless through the first five innings. He ended up allowing three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings of work while striking out four to remain perfect at 3-0 on the season. Matt Bishop tossed 2 2/3 innings and held the Tigers to one run and struck out five. Stephen Gostkowski suffered the loss giving up six earned runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Darryl and Trevor Lawhorn homered for the first time in the same inning in the fifth.
ECU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Trevor Lawhorn doubled leading off the inning. After Mark Minicozzi singled, Ryan Norwood's RBI single brought in Trevor Lawhorn for the early, 1-0 lead. ECU loaded the bases with no outs, but Gostkowski held the Pirates to one run on Jamie Paige's ground bringing in Minicozzi.
Norwood doubled in another run in the top of the fourth giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead. Trevor Lawhorn and Darryl Lawhorn both homered in the top of the fifth putting ECU ahead, 6-0. After Ryan Jones singled to right field, Darryl Lawhorn hit a two-run shot to right field. With one out, Trevor Lawhorn sent a solo home run into the bullpen in left center for the final run of the inning.
Memphis drew within, 6-4, in the bottom of the sixth with four runs. Josh Payne drove in the Tigers first run pulling the Tigers within, 6-1. With runners on first and second, Brent Dlugach tripled in two more runs as the Tigers trailed, 6-3. Adam Amar then hit a ball off the mound that dribbled into right field scoring Dlugach.
Trevor Lawhorn drove in Ryan Jones pushing the Pirates ahead, 7-4, in the top of the seventh.
Darry Lawhorn's second home run of the game pushed the Pirates ahead, 8-4.
ECU continues its nine-game road swing when the Pirates travel to UNC Wilmington Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
