LaSalle Transfer Bell Joins Pirates
August 25, 2004 | Men's Basketball
Bell started 25 of the Explorers' 29 games as a sophomore, despite playing out of position. At 6-7, Bell is more comfortable at the swing forward position, but spent the last two seasons saddled at the power forward position. He averaged 5.8 points and 2.5 rebounds in 21 minutes of action per game last year.
As a freshman, Bell ranked second on the team in rebounds (140), third in blocks (11) and steals (22). He appeared in all 29 games, made eight starts and averaged 7.5 points per game.
"We're very happy to get David," said Herrion. "We're getting a youngster that played two years of college basketball at a very high level in the Atlantic 10 Conference. He played more around the basket at LaSalle, but he's more of a perimeter player."
"He's getting an opportunity to restart his career. He was highly touted out of high school and now wants a new start, and a chance to play on the perimeter. He is a long, athletic player that will add a lot of depth on the perimeter."
Due to NCAA rules regarding transferring between Division I universities, Bell will sit out the 2004-05 season before playing with the Pirates in 2005-06.
A native of Philadelphia, Bell played his first three seasons of prep basketball at Onley High School, where he was a Philadelphia Daily News second team All-Public selection in 2001. He played his senior season at Mount Zion Academy in Durham, where he averaged 14.2 points per game.
