
Pirates Knock Off Rice In A Five-Game Battle

HOUSTON, Texas--Pam Ferris and Kelley Wernert combined on 38 kills as East Carolina defeated Rice, 3-2, Friday night at Autry Court. The Pirates and the Owls battled to the end in the fifth game with ECU prevailing with the 23-21 win. The Pirates improve to 13-8 on the season and 4-4 in Conference USA play while Rice falls to 13-6 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
Ferris led the Pirates with 20 kills while Wernert added 18. Jaime Bevan led the Pirates with a .333 hitting percentage, recording seven kills and just one error on 18 attack attempts. Wernert finished second on the team with a .302 hitting percentage, collecting just five errors on 43 attack attempts. Heidi Krug recorded a double-double with 62 assists and 12 digs. Ferris, in addition to her 20 kills, added one set assist, eight digs, one block assists and a team-high three aces. Bevan and Mignon Dubenion led the effort at the net with two solo blocks apiece. Libero Trish Monroe led the Pirate defense with 18 digs.
Five different Owls finished with double-digit kills led by Olaya Pazo's 23. Tessa Kuykendall picked up 21 kills, Karyn Morgan added 19 kills while Jessica Holderness recorded 14 kills and Kristina Hoban tallied 12. Hoban picked up a triple-double, adding 61 assists and 13 digs to her 12 kills. Four other Owls finished with double-digits digs led by Pazo's 17. Rachel Lopez also picked up a double-double with 10 assists and 10 digs. Kuykendall led the Rice defense at the net with six block assists.
ECU won the first two games 30-26 and 30-25 before Rice tied the match back up with wins of 30-15 and 30-20. The two teams extending the fifth game late until the Pirates won 23-21 in the fifth and final game.
The Pirates return to action Saturday night when the team stays in Houston to face the Cougars at 8 p.m. at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
