WILMINGTON, N.C.- East Carolina won its fifth straight non-conference match with a 3-0 sweep on UNC Wilmington Tuesday night at Hanover Hall. Kelley Wernert led the Pirates with 16 kills while Pam Ferris recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 11 digs en route to the victory.
The Pirates won in convincing fashion, picking up their sixth shutout win of the season, 30-25, 30-15, 30-22. With the win, ECU improves to 9-6 overall on the season, 5-3 on the road and 8-4 in non-conference action. UNCW drops to 3-12 on the season with the loss.
Wernert, who has tied for the team lead in kills the past two matches, set a season-high with her 16 kills against the Seahawks. The sophomore outside hitter also finished the match with one service ace, two solo blocks and six digs. Ferris recorded at least 14 kills for the ninth time this season while also adding two assists and two service aces. Erica Wilson also tallied double-digit kills with 10 while leading the team with a .667 attack percentage, not committing an error on 15 attack attempts. Trish Monroe led the Pirate defense with 12 digs while Caitlin Daly and Heidi Krug added eight and seven digs respectively. Heidi Krug recorded 50 assists, reaching the 50-assist mark for the fifth time this season.
Felicity Ribalkin and Lindsay Moffitt led the Seahawks offensively with eight kills apiece. Ribalkin and Moffitt attempted 26 and 28 kills respectively with each player committing three errors. Brittany Sandy led UNC with a .667 attack percentage, tallying seven kills and just one error on nine attempts. Sadie Rogers led UNCW with 22 assists while Kate Bennett led the defense with nine digs.
The Pirates out-hit the Seahawks, .376-to-.103, while also finishing with 28 more kills, 19 more digs and 26 more assists than UNC Wilmington. ECU finished with four total team blocks and five service aces while UNCW collected three total team blocks and two service aces as a team.
The Pirates will return home this weekend when the team hosts a pair of C-USA opponents. ECU will battle new conference foe UCF on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. and Southern Miss on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. inside Minges Coliseum.
