GREENVILLE, N.C.- Senior outside hitter Pam Ferris recorded 20 kills to lead East Carolina to its second straight shutout with a 3-0 win over UCF Friday night inside Minges Coliseum. Sophomores Kelley Wernert and Mignon Dubenion also had big nights for the Pirates, recorded 12 and eight kills respectively.
ECU improves its overall record to 10-6 overall while reaching .500 in Conference USA play with a record of 2-2. UCF falls to 4-8 on the season and 2-3 in conference play.
Ferris also led the Pirates with a .516 attack percentage, committing just four errors on 31 attack attempts. She also led ECU with three service aces while also adding seven digs. Trish Monroe and Heidi Krug led the Pirate defense with 14 and 13 digs respectively. Krug, who also picked up 46 assists, recorded her fourth double-double of the season. Dubenion led the defense at the net with three block assists while Wernert added two. Erica Wilson and Jaime Bevan also played well offensively with six kills apiece.
Maina Heming led UCF with 10 kills while committing six errors on 32 attack attempts. Jana Mitchell and Vesna Ukic picked up eight and six kills respectively while Jenny Heppert led the Golden Knights with a .333 attack percentage, recording five kills and just one error on 12 attack attempts. Kim Clonan collected 20 assists to lead UCF while Leah Alexander tallied nine assists and Heppert added two. Lindsay Randazzo won the lone Golden Knight with double-digit digs, recording 14 on the night.
The Pirates hit better than .300 in all three games while UCF managed to hit at least .200 just once. ECU won convincingly in the first game, 30-16, behind a fast start from Ferris and Wernert who tallied a combined 13 kills. The Pirates out-hit the Golden Knights .371-to-.103 in game one en route to the 14-point victory. East Carolina continued to play well in the second game, winning 30-23. Ferris picked up one-third of ECU's points in the second game with nine kills and a service ace. ECU clinched the shut-out with a 30-25 win in the third game behind four kills each from Ferris, Wernert and Dubenion.
East Carolina will host their second C-USA opponent of the weekend on Sunday, Oct. 9 when the team takes on Southern Miss inside Minges Coliseum at 1 p.m.
