Lady Pirates Continue Success With 66-54 Win Over Drexel

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games with a 66-54 victory over Drexel in the championship game of the CPW's/Atavola Market Café Lady Pirate Invitational at Minges Coliseum.
With the victory the Lady Pirates improved to 5-1 while posting their best record through six games in 18 years. The loss drops Drexel to 2-3 on the season.
Freshman point guard and all-tournament selection Jasmine Young led the Lady Pirates with 16 points and three assists. Also scoring in double figures for the Pirates was tournament Most-Outstanding-Player Cherie Mills with 13 points, while LaCoya Terry added 10 points.
Entering the second half with a 10-point advantage, the Lady Pirates extended their lead to 42-26 by the 15:05 mark following a three-pointer by Young. Following a trey by the Dragons Narissa Suber, Young retaliated with a second basket from long range to push the lead back 16.
With just over four minutes remaining in the contest, ECU took its largest advantage of the game of 22 points, following a layup and subsequent foul shot by Jessica Honesty. Drexel (2-3) narrowed the gap to nine points in the final minute of the contest, but didn't get any closer as ECU captured its second Lady Pirate Invitational title in three seasons.
"We played a lot more under control today," said head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. "Some of the things that we were trying do, we were able to accomplish. I was a little bit disappointed in the last four minutes. We lost momentum, but we had a lot of people that don't get to play a lot out there. I would like for them to be able to handle it a little bit better."
Connecting on 11-of-26 (42.3%) shots from the floor, ECU took its largest lead of the season into the locker room with a 33-23 halftime advantage. LaCoya Terry and Gabriela Husarova who each scored a team-high eight points prior to intermission.
ECU jumped out early with to an early 17-8 lead after Husarova connected on a three-point shot and Drexel sent the Lady Pirates to the line where they converted all four free throw attempts. The Dragons narrowed the Pirate lead to three following a pair of Nicole Suber free throws, capping a 8-2 run, which closed the lead to 19-16.
The Lady Pirates countered with a 14-7 run of their own over the final 4:29, with Impris Manning contributing three points and one steal during that stretch. LaCoya Terry, who also added three points in the span, closed out first half scoring with a jumper in the lane.
East Carolina returns to the court on Wednesday, Dec. 7 when they welcome Virginia Commonwealth to Minges Coliseum. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Lady Pirates Head Coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener
On Jasmine Young: "She really played well today and she is really starting to learn more from the point guard position and what we are trying to do offensively and defensively. She makes a lot of things happen and she played a really solid game today."
Drexel defending Cherie Mills: "Drexel did a really good job of sagging in on her and we were having a little bit harder time trying to get her the ball. That is something that we have got to get better at and we have got to get her more touches against the zone."
Balanced attack: "We have a lot of balance and depth and I knew that we were going to have to play a lot of people today. We had a tough game yesterday, which was different from last year because we had three guards and didn't have many subs. But now, we have different players that will step up and are capable of making plays. It is good when you can have people playing 10-12 minutes, be able to help us and be productive on the floor."
Southern holds off Idaho 76-74 in double overtime thriller
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Southern staved off Idaho in the consolation game of the CPW's/Atavola Market Café Lady Pirate Invitational with a 76-74 double overtime thriller at Minges Coliseum on Sunday.
In the second overtime frame, the Jaguars outscored Idaho 9-7, led behind Ciara Shiggs six-point output, allowing Southern to earn a split in the two-day event. Shiggs, who tied along with the Vandals (3-4) Emily Faurholt for game-high honors, finished with 24 points and five rebounds.
A tied game at the end of regulation, behind Rolanda Monroe's four point Southern (3-2) took a 67-61 advantage at the 2:51 mark in the first overtime session. Emily Halliday, who scored her first six points in the extra frame, tied the game with back-to-back three point baskets. Monroe, along with teammate Fredericka Lewis, accounted for the six points scored by the Jaguars.
Trailing 53-50 with 2:51 remaining in the game an Emily Faurholt three pointer tied the game for Idaho, which proved to be a key play down the stretch. Trading buckets over the next 1:48 until Fredericka Lewis made a layup giving the Jaguars a 59-56 lead with 1:18 in the half. Faurholt again came up big in the game, connecting on her second three point attempt in the waning minutes to tie the game.
In the first half of action Idaho jumped out to an early 10-5 advantage six minutes into the game following a layup by Leilani Mitchell. Following a Jaguar run which narrowed the lead to one point the Vandals would respond with a 12-2 run which would stretch its lead to 22-11 at the 8:34 mark.
With each teams trading baskets over the next three minutes the Vandals' Ashley Blake connected on a jumper giving Idaho a 26-19 advantage. The Jaguars crawled back into the game outscoring Idaho 11-6, including six points from Ashley Blake over a 4:35 stretch. Southern closed out the final 1:14 of the half with a 7-2 run, including the only three-point basket of the half by Ciara Shiggs.
