Ricky Brooks Named C-USA Pitcher of the Week
March 28, 2005 | Baseball
Brooks came within one out of tossing the first nine-inning no-hitter in Conference USA history in game two of a doubleheader Saturday versus Charlotte. He lost the no-hitter when Adam Willard hit a single through the left side as the Pirates defeated the 49ers 6-0. Brooks allowed just the one hit while walking one and striking out eight. The complete game shutout was the first thrown by a Pirate since Jason Tourangeau accomplished the feat on May 23, 2003 at the Conference USA Tournament against Houston. On the week, Brooks tossed 10 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out nine and walking just one.
The right-hander from North Tonawanda, N.Y. has an ERA of 3.72 in 19 1/3 innings pitched this season. Currently 1-1 on the season, Brooks has started two games and appeared in four more. He has allowed eight runs on nine hits while striking out 17 batters while walking eight. Brooks currently leads the club holding opponents to a .132 batting average against him.
Sophomore Mike Flye (Feb. 14-20) and junior Jeff Ostander (Feb. 28 - March 6) were the first two pitchers to receive the honor this season.
East Carolina (14-9, 1-5 C-USA) returns to the field Wednesday when the team hosts Campbell at Clark-LeClair Stadium at 7 p.m.
