PINEHURST, N.C.? East Carolina junior Robin Smith posted a final round score of 77 to finish tied for 15th (228) at the First Annual Pinehurst Intercollegiate. The tournament, which was sponsored by Pinehurst Golf Club and East Carolina, was being held at the par-72, 7,035-yard Centennial Course No. 8 in Pinehurst, N.C.
On the final day of competition, the Pirates (65-62-3) moved up two spots and finished tied for seventh with instate rival UNC Wilmington with a 54-hole score of 918, 43 strokes behind tournament champion and future Conference USA foe SMU (875). Xavier claimed second place honors in the team portion with an 876, while Indiana (888), Marquette (899) and Southern Miss (905) rounded out the top-five.
In the individual portion, SMU's Colt Knost (210) drained a 30-foot putt for birdie while Indiana's Jeff Overton (211) recorded a double-bogey to take individual honors. Knost's putt also helped SMU capture the team title over Xavier by one stroke.
"There was some incredible golf being played this week," said Pinehurst Tournament Director Hank Thompson. "The tournament came down to the final hole for the team and individual titles and we couldn't have asked for anything more. We look forward to hosting more collegiate tournaments like this one in the future."
Xavier's Andy Pope (212), who was also in the final group with Knost and Overton, finished third with a final round 72.
Pirate senior Brandon Pace recorded the other lone top-25 finish for ECU with a final round 78 for a tie for 22nd place.
"I'm extremely honored for ECU to be able to co-host this tournament with a first class golf facility like Pinehurst," said Head Golf Coach Kevin Williams. "Everyone involved had a great time and got to see some exciting golf today."
ECU will be back in action April 4-5 when they travel to Greensboro to participate in the Four Oaks Intercollegiate.
