GREENVILLE, N.C.--T.J. Hose and P.J. Connelly combined to strikeout 14 Tiger batters while only allowing two hits as East Carolina shutout Memphis 12-0 Friday night at Clark-LeClair Stadium. ECU improves to 22-15 on the year while moving to .500 in the conference while Memphis drops to 9-27 overall and 3-13 in C-USA play.
Hose earned his third win of the season, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out nine in six innings of work. Connelly tossed the final three innings without allowing a hit. The senior left-hander struck out five of the nine batters he faced.
Adam Witter and Dale Mollenhauer each recorded four hits on the night while Brian Cavanaugh scored a career-high four runs. Witter finished 4-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored while Mollenhauer also went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Witter's four hits ties a career-high that he set last weekend at Louisville while Mollenhauer's four hits sets a new high mark for him. Cavanaugh and Ryan Peisel also collected multiple hits with Cavanaugh going 2-for-3 and Peisel hitting 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Ryan Martin collected both of Tiger's hits going 2-for-3 with singles in the first and the fourth innings.
Daniel de Armas took the loss for Memphis, allowing four earned runs on five hits in 1 1/3 innings. Chris Davis tossed 4 1/3 innings, giving up six runs, only two of which were earned. Chris South threw the final 2 1/3 innings for the Tigers.
The Pirates scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead over the Tigers. Cavanaugh singled to left and Minicozzi followed him with a double to right-center, plating Cavanaugh for the first run of the game. Witter then doubled to left-center to score Minicozzi. Peisel hit his second triple of the season to right, scoring Witter.
ECU added three more runs in the second to take a 6-0 lead. Dale Mollenhauer tripled down the line in right and scored when Harrison Eldridge reached on an error by second baseman Patrick Hope. Eldridge later scored on a Minicozzi sacrifice fly to right and Cavanaugh, who reached on catcher's interference earlier in the inning, scored from third on an Adam Witter single.
Mollenhauer scored his second run of the game in the bottom of the third when Eldridge drove him home with a double to the gap in right.
Adam Witter's third hit of the game brought home Cavanaugh and Minicozzi, who reached on an error by rightfielder Chris Newsom, scored on a Peisel fielder's choice.
Smith and Costanzo scored in the bottom of the sixth on a Mollenhauer bloop single to center, pushing the ECU to 11-0.
Cavanaugh's fourth run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh when Witter drove him in with a single to right.
Saturday's baseball game between East Carolina and Memphis has been moved from 6 p.m. to 1 p.m. due to pending inclement weather in Eastern North Carolina. Sunday's contest was also changed earlier this week from a 1 p.m. start to an 11 a.m. first pitch.
