
Pirates Split Matches Saturday at BGSU Invitational

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. - After losing 3-0 to host Bowling Green earlier in the day, the Pirates bounced back to knock off Chicago State in their second match Saturday, 3-0, at Anderson Arena. East Carolina dominated Chicago State in the second match of the day, winning 30-16, 30-17, 30-19.

Katie Jannusch and Pam Ferris carried ECU (4-4) in the second match on Saturday with a combined 29 kills between the two senior outside hitters. Ferris led the team wit h 16 kills while Jannusch finished with 13 kills on 26 attack attempts. Jannusch, who did not commit an attack error on the day, led the Pirates with an attack percentage of .500. Kim Jefferson tallied nine kills while Jaime Bevan and Kelley Wernert each recorded five. Libero Trish Monroe led the ECU defense with 14 digs while Ferris collected 10. Setter Heidi Krug tallied 41 set assists while Jannusch added three.
Chrissy Davis and Shakeila Castile-Jones each recorded seven kills to lead the offensive attack for CSU. Catherine Everist tallied 12 kills while Davis, Everist and Lakiesha Davis all collected six digs to lead the way defensively for the Cougars.
The Pirates, who finished with 49 kills, hit .424 as a team while Chicago State hit .012, collecting 22 kills and 21 errors. ECU collected 10 service aces led by Krug's four. Each team finished with four total blocks while ECU collected 38 digs to CSU's 31.

Erica Wilson led the Pirates offensively with nine kills while Kim Jefferson and Pam Ferris each picked up eight. Heidi Krug tallied a team-high 34 assists, while also picking up one kill, nine digs and four block assists. Three Pirates finished with double digit digs led by Johanna Bertini's 14, while Trish Monroe recorded 13 digs and Ferris picked up 10. Jaime Bevan also played well in a losing effort with seven kills and four block assists.
Meghan Mohr led Bowling Green (4-3) with 16 kills and a .343 attack percentage. Corrie Mills and Kendra Halms also helped lead the offensive attack with 11 and 10 kills respectively. Chrissy Gothke tallied 37 assists while Chesley Meek and Emily Manser each picked up 17 digs to lead the BGSU defense. Mills led the defense at the net with eight block assists.
BGSU hit .222 as a team while ECU hit just .095. The Falcons defense picked up 13 total team blocks and 78 digs while the Pirates finished with six blocks and 69 digs. The Falcons won with scores of 30-25, 30-25, 30-24.
ECU returns to action next weekend when the Pirates hit the road for the third consecutive weekend to play in the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Volleyball Classic. The Pirates will play Charleston Southern and host Wofford Friday, Sept. 16 in Spartanburg, S.C. ECU will face the Buccaneers at 1 p.m. before taking on the Terriers at 7 p.m.
