HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- East Carolina dropped its first Conference USA match of the season with a 3-0 loss at Marshall Friday night at Cam Henderson Center. Marshall's Kelly-Anne Billingy and Stephanie Cahill each recorded 13 kills to lead the Thundering Herd to their second C-USA victory of the season.
ECU falls to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in C-USA play while Marshall improves to 10-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play. With the loss, Marshall snapped ECU's five-match winning streak.
Erica Wilson and Kelley Wernert led the Pirates will seven kills while Pam Ferris picked up six. Heidi Krug directed the ECU offense with 25 assists while also finishing with a kill, a service ace, a block assist and a team-high seven digs. Wernert and libero Johanna Bertini each finished with six digs defensively for ECU.
In addition to Billingy and Cahill offensively, Nickie Sanlin also collected double-digit kills, finishing with 11. Cahill, who tallied 10 digs, was the lone player on either team to collect double-digit digs. Katie Stein picked up 35 assists to lead the Thundering Herd offense while Katherine Poss added eight assists. Sanlin led Marshall at the net with one solo block and five block assists while Billingy collected four block assists.
The Thundering Herd took advantage of 21 Pirate errors to pick up the win in three games, 30-20, 30-23, 30-26. Marshall finished with 49 kills to ECU's 27 while also out-hitting the Pirates .287-to-.065.
The Pirates, who are coming off a 12-match road trip, will return home this weekend to play the Thundering Herd for the second time in three days. The two teams will hit the court Sunday, Oct. 2 in Minges Arena at 1 p.m.
