GREENVILLE, N.C.- East Carolina fell to Marshall for the second time in three days with a 3-0 loss to the Thundering Herd Sunday afternoon in Minges Coliseum. Marshall, led by Kelly-Anne Billingy's match-high 26 kills, hit .398 as a team while also collecting 11 total team blocks en route to the victory.
ECU drops to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in Conference USA play while Marshall improves to 11-4 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.
Outside hitters Erica Wilson and Kelley Wernert led the Pirate offense with nine kills apiece while Pam Ferris added eight. Ferris led the defense with nine digs while Trish Monroe tallied eight and Heidi Krug finished with six. Krug also collected 36 assists, two kills and one block assist. Mignon Dubenion and Kelley Wernert played well at the net with Dubenion recording three block assists and Wernert adding one solo block and two block assists.
Marshall won the first game, 30-16, behind their best offensive game as well as a strong effort at the net. Billingy and Cahill each finished with five kills in the first game while the team hit .560, recording 16 kills on 25 attempts while committing just two errors. The team finished with five total blocks, led by Sanlin who finished with three block assists in the game.
The Pirates fought back in the second game but came up short, falling 30-26. The Thundering Herd slightly out-hit ECU, .279-to-.262, behind Billingy's nine kills on 10 attempts. Four different Pirates collected four kills in the second game while Heidi Krug recorded 18 assists.
The Thundering Herd completed the shut-out with another 30-26 win in the third game. Billingy picked up 12 more kills in the final game while Amber Sims and Stein each finished with three block assists. Wernert and Jaime Bevan picked up five and four kills respectively for the Pirates.
ECU will take a day off before traveling to Wilmington to take on in-state rival UNC Wilmington on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. inside UNCW's Hanover Hall.
