Greenville, N.C. - Justin Rose scored 18 points and Anthony Williams dropped in 14 as UCF sent East Carolina to its fifth straight loss Wednesday night, 64-59, inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum in a Conference USA contest.
The Golden Knights shot nearly 61 percent from the field in the first half, making 14-of-23 shots overall and 4-of-7 three-point field goal attempts. The Pirates shot almost 43 percent prior to halftime, but trailed by seven at the break, 37-30.
A jumper by Sam Hinnant and dunk and lay up by Corey Rouse pulled ECU (6-12, 0-5) to within two points less than three minutes into the second half, 38-36. However that is as close as the Pirates got the rest of the night.
Rose scored six straight points to push UCF (9-8, 3-1) out to its largest lead of the night, 46-36.
The Pirates made a late charge and cut their deficit to five with 24 seconds remaining, but Josh Peppers made two free throws with seven seconds left to seal the game for the Golden Knights.
As great as UCF shot in the first half, it shot just as poorly in the second half. The Golden Knight connected on just 30 percent of its second half shots.
Unfortunately for East Carolina, it was unable to take advantage of the situation. The Pirates made a woeful 26.9 percent (7-26) of its second half field goal attempts.
Rouse led the Pirates with a game-high 22 points, grabbing 12 rebounds for his 23rd career double-double. Josh King came off the bench to net a season-high 10 points, making a pair of 3s and four free throws.
The Pirates will attempt to end their current slide Saturday, January 28, when it hosts Conference USA newcomer Tulsa. The game is schedule for a 7 p.m. start.
