Greenville, N.C. - Senior Corey Rouse had 16 points and nine rebounds, and Sam Hinnant added 12 points to give East Carolina its first Conference USA win of the season, defeating Tulsa here Saturday night, 59-45, in the process snapping a five-game losing streak.
Tyronne Beale and Courtney Captain each added eight points for the Pirates and Japhet McNeil contributed four points, while dishing out nine assists as the Pirates shot over 40 percent (41.2) for the first time in the last six games and sent the Golden Hurricane home with a loss in its first visit to Greenville.
Anthony Price led the Golden Hurricane (7-11, 2-3) with 13 points and teammate Darold Crow chipped in nine points. Sam Mitchell and Brett McDade contributed eight points apiece.
The game turned for the Pirates (7-12, 1-5) in the final four minutes of the first half as they closed out the frame on a 16-3 run to take a 13-point lead into the locker room behind a barrage of 3-point baskets.
Hinnant's first three-point field goal at the 3:58 mark snapped a 16-all tie and sparked the run. His second three-point field goal of the night came 1:45 later and capped a 10-0 spurt by ECU. Captain then made a 3-pointer of his own with four seconds left before intermission to push the lead out to 13.
ECU extended its lead to 18 points on a 3-pointer from Tom Hammonds as the clock dipped under 14 minutes remaining in the game. The lead blossomed to as many as 22 points over the next three minutes.
Tulsa closed to within 10 points 26 seconds into the second half, but never pulled within singles digits as it shot a dismal 1-of-14 from behind the arc. It dug itself a double figure halftime deficit by shooting just 27.3 percent (6-of-22) in the first half, while committing 12 turnovers.
ECU scored 13 points off those 12 first half miscues.
