GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's basketball team dropped its third game at home Sunday afternoon falling to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane 74-52 in front of 1,007 fans at Minges Coliseum.
The Pirates (12-7, 4-4) got off to a slow start falling behind 10-4 in the opening minutes of play when Kara Pongonis-Paslay drained the second of three 3's on the day. Tulsa would stretch their lead to 13, 25-12, when Tandem Mays completed a three-point play with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half.
ECU would answer Tulsa's run with a 7-0 run of its own capped off by an Impris Manning lay-up to draw within six, 25-19. The Hurricane then responded with a mini-run to push the lead back to an 11-point advantage. TU built its lead thanks in part to 10 ECU turnovers, which the Hurricane converted into 17 points. LaToya Horton's put-back at the 2:29 mark cut Tulsa's lead to nine points and proved to be the final points of the half for both squads, 34-25.
Tulsa, who never trailed in the second half, opened up the period on a 6-2 run to extended its lead once again to 13, 40-27, behind an Emily Jaskowiak jumper with 17:44 remaining. After a LaToya Horton jumper made it 40-29, the Hurricane went on another run (10-2) to extend its lead to 21, 52-31 which was capped off by Mays' lay-up.
ECU did manage one final comeback attempt with a 10-0 run that concluded with a Cherie Mills jumper. TU's Jillian Robbins hit a short jumper that triggered a 16-6 Tulsa run to conclude the game.
Mills lead the Pirates in scoring for the 12th time this season with 15 points. She also grabbed a game-high five rebounds while connecting on 46-percent (6-of-13) of her shots. Freshman Jasmine Young collected her 12th double-digit game of the season with 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the floor, which included three 3's. Manning added eight points and Jessica Slack connected on two shots from behind the arc to finish with six points.
For Tulsa, Mays lead four-players in double figures with 17. Jaskowiak and Pongonis-Paslay each finished with 15 points, while Robbins chipped in 10 points. Pongonis-Paslay also dished out a game-best seven assists and Mays collected a career-high three steals.
