
Lady Pirate Tennis Falls At N.C. State 6-1

RALEIGH, N.C. - The N.C. State women's tennis team used a doubles sweep and five singles wins to post a 6-1 non-conference victory over visiting East Carolina at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center Saturday.
With the victory, N.C State kept its record perfect at 5-0 while the Lady Pirates dropped to 6-3.
The Pack took an early 1-0 advantage after winning all three doubles bouts. Nandita Chandrasekar and Elin Stahl Johansson finished first at No. 2, rolling past past freshman Anca Dumitru and sophomore Alex Smith by an 8-1 margin, while Shona Lee and Julia Roach knocked off the sophomore tandem of Luiza Borges and Mireia Gol 8-2 at No. 3. At No. 1, Barbara Orlay and Alejandra Guerra collected their third doubles win of the spring by downing seniors Gillie Bailey and Kirstin Buchanan 8-6.
Orlay, currently ranked No. 90 nationally in singles play by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), started the Pack off with a solo win at No. 1, shutting out Dumitru 6-0, 6-0, while Guerra defeated Borges at No. 4, 6-1, 6-3.
Gol tallied ECU's only triumph of the afternoon by cruising past Chandrasekar 6-3, 6-3, which also marked NCSU's first singles loss of the season at No. 3. At No. 4, Lee clinched the Pack's fifth victory of the year when she downed Bailey, 6-1, 7-5, in her debut at No.2.
Neils Barringer recorded her first career shutout win at No. 6 over Buchanan 6-0, 6-0, while Roach won at No. 5 over sophomore Hannah Priest 6-4, 6-1.
After opening the spring season with nine straight road matches, ECU will finally return home Thursday, Feb. 16 to host Elon and Mount Olive at 1:00 and 5:00 p.m., respectively.
