GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's tennis team completed a doubleheader sweep Thursday when it picked up a 6-1 non-conference victory over Mount Olive College in the nightcap at the ECU Tennis Complex.
The win over the Spartans followed a 7-0 triumph earlier in the day against Elon which served as the Lady Pirates' home opener.
East Carolina took the doubles competition, which was highlighted by an 8-0 shutout victory by the sophomore tandem of Hannah Priest and Alex Smith over Emily Escolas and Jennifer Moats at the No. 3 flight. Freshman Presley Thomas and sophomore Logan Beam followed by teaming up for an 8-1 win against Mariana Shimoda and Lauren Harris while sophomores Mireia Gol and Luiza Borges earned an 8-4 decision over Lucia Henkle and Carol de Salgado Aro.
The Lady Pirates went on to capture five of their six singles matchups to secure the team victory.
After Henkle picked up Mount Olive's only win by outlasting senior Gillie Bailey 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 at the No. 1 singles slot, senior Kirstin Buchanan set the tone for the remainder of the match by dispatching De Salgado Aro 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2.
Other ECU singles wins included Priest's 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Shimoda at No. 3, Beam's 6-0, 6-1 rout over Moats at No. 4, Smith's 6-2, 6-2 decision over Harris at No. 5 and Zandy Overcash's 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Escolas at No. 6.
The Lady Pirates will return to action Saturday, hosting Campbell and North Carolina A&T for a pair of matches beginning at 9:30 a.m.
