GREENVILLE, N.C. - N.C. State defeated UNC Wilmington, 9-8, Sunday in the final game of the Third Annual Keith LeClair Classic sponsored by Wachovia and Trade-Wilco. NCSU (12-1) closes out the KLC as the only undefeated team on the weekend while UNCW (6-3) ends the classic 1-2.
An Aaron Bates' single up the middle with two outs in the eighth scored Matt Camp from third, breaking an 8-8 tie to give the Wolfpack the one-run victory.
In addition to scoring the winning run, Camp slugged his first homer of the season with a two-run shot over the wall in right.
Andrew Taylor picked up the win for NCSU in just 2/3 of an inning of work while Sam Walls earned his first save, pitching two scoreless innings to close out the game. Andrew Brackman made his first start of the season, giving up three runs, two earned, on six hits while walking one and striking out two in 2 1/3 innings. Jason Duncan relieved Brackman and allowed three unearned runs in three innings of work. Four different relievers tossed the next 1 2/3 before giving way to Taylor.
Matt Mangini and Caleb Mangum each finished with three hits and two RBI for the Wolfpack.
Bradley Holt suffered the loss in relief for UNCW, allowing one run on one hit while walking three and striking out one. Starter Zach Booker allowed eight runs on 10 hits while walking three and striking out two in four innings of work. Jonathan Cantrell, former Pirate Brett Braxton and Adam Paul all tossed an inning apiece in relief.
Chris Hatcher led UNCW with a 3-for-5, two RBI performance at the plate.
Mangum's single to right-center in the second scored Jon Still from second to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 advantage early.
UNCW got the run back in the bottom of the second. After Brackman retired the first two batters of the inning, Justin Barefoot doubled down the line in left to start the brief two-out rally. Steve Halford then singled to short and a throwing error by shortstop Jonathan Diaz allowed Barefoot to score.
Back-to-back singles by Still and Mangini in the third scored Jeremy Synan and Brian Aragon put the Wolfpack back up 3-1.
Hatcher singled to short to lead off the bottom of the third and he later scored on a Matt Poulk RBI single up the middle, cutting the N.C. State lead to 3-2. An RBI groundout off the bat of Jonathan Batts then tied the game up again.
N.C. State re-took the lead in the fourth when Camp hit the two-run shot to right, scoring Mangum.
The Wolfpack extended their lead in the fifth with three more runs, pushing the score to 8-3 after five.
The Seahawks didn't waste any time getting back in it, scoring three in the sixth and two in the seventh, tying the game up for the third time on the night.
West Virginia 5, Penn State 4
West Virginia handed Penn State its third straight one-run loss in the Keith LeClair Classic with a 5-4 win in 10 innings over the Nittany Lions in Sunday's first game at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Adam White's RBI single to left in the bottom of the tenth scored David Carpenter to give the Mountaineers their second win of the classic.
With the loss, Penn State falls to 0-6 while West Virginia improves to 5-1.
Justin Jenkins led WVU with a 3-for-4, two-RBI performance at the plate. Tyler Kuhn, Stan Posluszny, Carpenter and White all finished with two hits. In addition to Jenkins, Carpenter finished with two RBI while Posluszny finished with one.
Dan Leatherman earned the win for West Virginia, allowing one run on six hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. Starter Matt Yurish earned a no decision, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out four.
Cory Wine and Brian Ernst led the Nittany Lions with each hitter going 3-for-5. Lance Thompson finished 2-for-5 with two of the team's four RBI.
David Bumstead suffered the loss, allowing one unearned run on two hits in 2/3 of an inning. Starter Craig Clark went seven innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits while striking out six. Gary Amato and Matt Ogrodnik combined to throw the eighth and ninth innings.
The two teams each scored two runs in the third before the Mountaineers took a 3-2 lead in the fourth. PSU got the run back in the fifth win a run and then went ahead with another in the sixth. WVU tied it back up in the seventh and both teams remained tied through nine.
