Greenville, N.C. - Ramon Dyer scored 17 points, including a 3-pointer that put Houston ahead to stay 40 seconds into overtime, to lead the Cougars to a 64-60 win over East Carolina on Saturday.
The Cougars (14-6, 5-3 C-USA) had three players score double figures, including Lanny Smith, who finished with a game-high 20 on 6-of-11 shooting from behind the arc and 2-of-4 at the foul line. Oliver Lafayette, the third leading scorer in Conference USA, dropped in 18 points.
Jeremy Ingram recorded his second double-double of the season to lead East Carolina (7-14, 1-7 C-USA) with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Sam Hinnant was the only other Pirate to net double figures as he finished with 13 points.
Corey Rouse also grabbed double figure rebounds for ECU as he finished with 17 boards, tying his career-high.
Despite out-rebounding and out-shooting the Cougars, the Pirates couldn't overcome 23 turnovers, which the Cougars converted into 27 points.
The Cougars, who lead the nation in steals per game, finished with 12 swipes as three players each made a trio of steals.
ECU jumped out to a 12-0 lead as Hinnant scored eight points in the first four minutes. Houston responded with a 14-0 run of its won to take its first lead of the game with 10:47 left in the first half.
The Pirates answered with another run of their own and built a 14-point lead, 31-17, with 5:13 remaining before halftime and led by seven at the break, 35-28.
Houston out-scored ECU 24-7 in the first 10 minutes of the second half to take a nine-point advantage, 52-43, as Lafayette and Smith combined to score 16 points during the stretch.
With his team trailing by six with 5:20 remaining, Ingram scored the Pirates' final six points to force overtime with a 3-pointer from the corner and then converted an old-fashioned 3-point play with 1:36 left in regulation to end the scoring before overtime.
