BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech used a 5-2 women's tennis victory over East Carolina to snap the Lady Pirates' five-match winning streak Tuesday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Tech opened the dual match by taking all three doubles contests for the first point, then won four of the six singles events.
In singles play, the Hokies' Inga Beermann, ranked No. 100 nationally, cruised past ECU freshman Anca Dumitru 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 1 slot, while No. 88 Anat Elazari posted a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over senior Gillie Bailey at No. 2. Jessica Long followed by picking up a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 over sophomore Mireia Gol and Ashley James completed Virginia Tech's top four sweep with a 6-3, 6-0 victory versus sophomore Luiza Borges.
The Lady Pirates earned wins in the final two singles competitions as senior Kirstin Buchanan rallied back to defeat J.J. Larson 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (8) at No. 5 and sophomore Hannah Priest came from behind to dispatch Bethan James 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (7) at the No. 6 position.
A 10-point super tiebreaker was used in lieu of a third set once the dual match outcome had been decided.
The match opened with Tech winning all three doubles contests as James/Long rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 3 over Dumitru/Alex Smith before the Hokies clinched the doubles point when Elazari/Larson won 8-5 in the No. 1 match over Bailey/Buchanan. Beermann/Abbey Walker completed the sweep with a 9-7 victory at No. 2 against Borges/Gol.
ECU will face Radford in Blacksburg late Tuesday before completing its season-opening nine-match road trip against N.C. State in Raleigh Saturday.
