Lady Pirates Defeat UAB For First Tourney Win

DALLAS, Texas - The first game of the 2006 Conference USA Women's Basketball Championship presented by Aeropostale came down to the wire as No. 8 East Carolina survived with a 47-46 victory over No. 9 UAB on Thursday at Moody Coliseum. The victory was the first ever for the Pirates in a C-USA Championship. East Carolina moves on to face top-seeded Tulsa in Friday's first quarterfinal at 1 p.m. CT.
Jasmine Young's driving lay-up with 1:26 to play put East Carolina back in the lead by one after UAB had erased a seven point, second-half deficit. Young's basket proved to be the game-winner as neither team scored in the final minute of play.
"I knew it was going to be a tough 40 minutes," East Carolina head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener said. "Both teams played really well, but I was proud that we came out with a win on the defensive end. Mentally and physically were not able to press the way I would like, but that's the direction we are headed."
A second-half UAB scoring drought that lasted over six minutes allowed East Carolina to take its first lead of the second half at the Pirates went on an 11-0 run. LaCoya Terry had nine of her team-leading 13 points after the break to spark the East Carolina comeback. LaToya Horton and Cherie Mills each added 10 points for the Pirates.
A jumper from the top of the key by Diamond Rogers put UAB up 46-45 at the 1:59 mark before Young answered on the next possession for the Pirates. An apparent basket by UAB's Carmen Guzman with 56.4 seconds would have given the Blazers the lead back, but it was waived off by a player control foul.
UAB held a 26-24 advantage at halftime thanks in large part to the play of its bench. The Blazers' reserves outscored the Pirates' reserves 16-1 in the opening 20 minutes as Christon Ingram and Britney Jones each had six points. The Blazers matched that effort in the second half holding a 32-2 bench scoring edge by the end of the game. Ingram added 11 points after the break and finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds to register her second-career double-double.
The Pirates led by as many as five in the opening six minutes of play, but could not sustain the lead. UAB went up by four late in the half, but a late bucket by the Pirates cut their deficit to two at the break.
Thursday's remaining games include No. 5 Marshall vs. No. 12 Memphis at 3:30 p.m. CT, No. 7 Houston vs. No. 10 UTEP at 6 p.m. CT and No. 6 Tulane vs. No. 11 UCF at 8:30 p.m. CT.
