
Volleyball Sweeps Wisconsin-Green Bay

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina swept Wisconsin-Green Bay in the Pirates' second match of the 2006 East Carolina Classic sponsored by Holiday Inn Express. The win marks ECU's fourth shutout of the season. With the win, the Pirates improve to 7-6 on the year, while the Phoenix drop to 5-5.
Mignon Dubenion led the Pirates offensively for the second straight night, tallying 11 kills in the win. Stephanie Turner added 10 kills and nine digs while setter Heidi Krug also had nine digs. Jaime Bevan registered seven blocks assists and one solo block on the night.
Abby Bergsma led the Phoenix with nine kills, two digs and two block assists. Sarah Rauen and Holly Visser each added eight kills. Setter Betty Slinger had 33 assists and six digs.
East Carolina recorded eight total blocks on the night, with 17 total in the tournament.
""We've been focusing and working hard on defense this last week in practice," head coach Chris Rushing said. "We got nine blocks last night and eight tonight, so I feel that our effort in practice is working."
Wisconsin-Green Bay defeated Grambling State in the first match of the day, 3-1. After winning the first two games, the Phoenix dropped game three, 30-21, before winning the match in four games.
Abby Bergsma led the Phoenix with 16 kills while Leah Steinbauer added 12. Chelsea Lyga registered 11 digs on the afternoon. UWGB recorded 56 kills and had a .204 hitting percentage. GSU's Lacey Cormier led the Tigers with 13 kills while Chelsey Lucas tallied 21 digs. The Tigers had 26 kills on the day, while hitting just -.022.
In the second match of the afternoon, Marshall swept Grambling State, 30-19, 30-17, 30-20. Kelly-Anne Billingy led the Herd with nine kills and six digs while Stephanie Cahill added eight kills. Christin Bimberg and Katherine Poss split time at the setter position, each recording 14 assists in the win. Cormier once again led the Tigers with 11 kills, while Lucas and Latisha Stennis each registered six digs.
The final day of the ECU Classic sponsored by Holiday Inn Express begins Saturday at 10 a.m. as Marshall faces off against Wisconsin-Green Bay. The Pirates will take on Grambling State at noon in the final match of the tournament.
