
Lady Pirates Drop Tennis Opener at UNC, 7-0

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina, ranked as the eighth-best squad nationally in the preseason Fila Collegiate Tennis Poll, opened the spring in impressive fashion Saturday with a 7-0 non-conference win over East Carolina at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels did not drop a set in all six singles matches and lost just four games in three doubles matches.
The Tar Heels (1-0) started the match by capturing the doubles point against the Lady Pirates (0-1). Seniors Jenna Long and Sara Anundsen, ranked 16th nationally among all doubles tandem in the country, defeated freshman Brooke Walter and sophomore Varinia Soler at No. 1, 8-2. The No. 24 tandem, Caitlin Collins and Sanaz Marand, also scored an 8-2 win over Alex Smith and Luiza Borges. At No. 3 doubles, Austin Smith and Meg Fanjoy posted an 8-0 shutout over Hannah Priest and Presley Thomas.
North Carolina continued its strong play in the singles competition - dropping just five games in six matches. The Lady Pirates' Soler and Priest each captured a pair of games in their respective matches at the No. 3 and No. 4 slots, respectively. In addition, Borges posted ECU's only other game victory against Katrina Tsang in the opening set of the No. 2 matchup.
East Carolina will return to action January 26-28 when it partipates at the Virginia Commonwealth Invitational in Richmond, Va.
