
Lady Pirates Shine At Wofford Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The East Carolina women's tennis team continued its fall schedule last weekend at the Wofford Invitational and the Lady Pirates turned in another strong effort. Led by a quintet of netters who notched 2-0 records, ECU compiled a 15-8 singles mark and a 6-6 doubles ledger. Of the five Lady Pirates with undefeated records, four of them won both matches in straight sets.
Senior Hannah Priest defeated Jody Wicks of High Point (7-5, 6-0) and Lauren Prickett of host Wofford (6-2, 6-0) while fellow senior and Greenville native Alex Smith took out Lea Catazana of High Point (6-2, 1-0 ret) and Vivian Neuenschwarder of South Carolina-Upstate (6-3, 6-4). Another pair of seniors, Mireia Gol and Luiza Borges also were unblemished as Gol overcame Susana Hernandez of USCU (6-1, 6-2) and Adirane Hodges of Wofford (6-4, 7-6) while Borges remained undefeated (5-0) this fall by dismissing Emilia Milovanovic of USCU (7-6, 6-1) and Cayley Wetzig of Wofford (7-5, 6-2).
In doubles play, Priest and Borges teamed to produce a 2-0 record as they defeated Wetzig and Sabrina Smyers of Wofford 8-1 and Diana Martinez and Maria Herrera of USCU 8-6. The tandem of Smith and Walter also tallied two victories, beating Mary Ellen Heaner of Wofford and teammate Sheela Lyengar 8-0 as well as Rebecca Carr and Wicks of Wofford 8-2.
The Lady Pirates will wrap up fall play when they travel to Columbia, S.C. for the South Carolina Invitational. The tournament is scheduled for Oct. 26-28.
