GREENVILLE, N.C. ---- Freshman Jeremy Wise scored 18 points to lead Southern Miss to an 80-42 victory over East Carolina inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Wednesday night, claiming its third consecutive win in the series.
Andre Stephens, one of four Golden Eagles to grab eight rebounds, netted 16 points and Jarvis Hill added 12.
Wise pushed Southern Miss (16-8, 6-5 C-USA) out to an early 15-point lead scoring 10 of his 18 first half points in the first 8:28 as the Golden Eagles held a 26-11 lead at the second media time out.
Hill's 3-pointer broke a 7-7 tie and started a 16-0 run which propelled the Eagles to a double digit lead which it never relinquished and a 47-22 halftime advantage.
USM made nine of its first 11 shots and finished the first half shooting 62.1 percent from the field (18-of-29). In comparison, ECU made 33.3 percent of its shots (10-of-30).
The Golden Eagles methodically built their lead as the Pirates struggled offensively, and outscored their opponent 33-20 in the second half.
Hill's third 3-pointer of the night gave Southern Miss a 43-point lead, 70-27, with 10:11 left in the game.
The 38-point loss was the Pirates' (5-19, 0-11 C-USA) worst home loss since Minges Coliseum opened in 1965.
Senior Courtney Captain led ECU with 13 points and junior Darrell Jenkins added 12.
Without the services of 6-9 freshman forward John Fields, who was sidelined with an injured knee, ECU was out-rebounded by 24 and recorded a coliseum record low 21 rebounds.
