Lady Pirates Earn Third Seed in 2007 Conference USA Championships

DALLAS, Texas-The East Carolina women's basketball team earned the three-seed in the 2007 Conference USA Championships which begin Thursday, March 1 in Tulsa, Okla. With their 11-5 record in league play, the Lady Pirates earned their first-ever first round bye in the upcoming championships.
Tulane concluded the 2006-07 regular season with a 78-70 win over Tulsa on Saturday and captured its first outright Conference USA regular season crown. The Green Wave shared the regular season title in 1997 and 1999. Tulane will also serve as the No. 1 seed in this week's C-USA Championship presented by Aeropostale in Tulsa, Okla.
First-round games begin at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 1 at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on the campus of The University of Tulsa. The top four seeds will earn a first-round bye and begin play in the quarterfinal round, which begins at 2 p.m. Friday, March 2.
The semifinals are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 3. Both games will be televised by CSTV. The championship game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. next Sunday, March 4. The game will be televised by ESPN2.
UAB locked up the No. 2 seed with an 84-63 win Saturday at Houston. The Blazers enter championship week with an overall record of 17-11 and winners of seven of their last nine games.
East Carolina, perhaps C-USA's hottest team heading into championship play, is the No. 3 seed. The Pirates have won seven straight, and their 11 C-USA wins is a program best.
Rice and UTEP finished the regular season with matching 10-6 conference records. Due to C-USA tiebreaker rules, the Owls earned the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye while the Miners are the No. 5 seed.
SMU and Southern Miss were also tied with 9-7 conference records. The Mustangs earned the No. 6 seed due to their 69-65 win in Hattiesburg, Miss., on Feb. 4. The Golden Eagles are the No. 7 seed. Both teams have won three of their last five games.
Marshall enters championship week as the No. 8 seed and looks to return some injuried players before its opening round game on Thursday.
Houston, which won the C-USA Women's Basketball Championship in 2004, is the No. 9 seed. The Cougars rely on just seven players but are lead by junior Tye Jackson, who is the league's leading scorer.
Tulsa, the No. 10 seed, has multiple factors in its favor. The Golden Hurricane are the defending tournament champions and will be hosting the event.
Rounding out the bracket is No. 11 seed UCF and No. 12 seed Memphis.
The Lady Pirates will face the winner of the No. 6 SMU/No. 11 UCF contest on Friday, March 2 at 9:30 p.m. EST.
