
Lady Pirate Tennis Splits Pair In Blacksburg

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The East Carolina women's tennis squad split a pair of non-conference matches Saturday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center, defeating Radford 7-0 in a morning neutral site matchup before falling to host Virginia Tech by an identical score during the afternoon.
In the opener against the Highlanders, ECU captured the doubles point after wins by tandems Anca Dumitru/Varinia Soler and Mireia Gol/Hannah Priest before taking 12 of 13 sets and sweeping all six singles matches.
Dumitru outlasted Daniela Milano 2-6, 7-5, 10-7 at the No. 1 slot while Luiza Borges, Gol, Brooke Walter, Soler and Priest all retired the Highlanders in two sets to clinch the team victory. Borges cruised past Camila Noldin (6-4, 6-3) at No. 2, Gol dismissed Ashton Downs (6-4, 6-2) at No. 3, Walter defeated Cassandra Price (6-0, 6-4) at No. 4 while Soler and Priest posted similar 6-1, 6-3 triumphs over Alexandra Spector and Antonietta Iosue at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
In the afternoon tilt against No. 68 Virginia Tech, the Hokies turned the tables and claimed two of three doubles matches to notch the first point before sweeping the first three singles bouts to clinch the victory.
After Tech jumped out to the 1-0 lead, Inga Beermann handed Dumitru a 6-0, 6-1 loss at No. 1 to claim the Hokies' second point. At No. 2, Jessica Long booked an identical score over Borges before J.J. Larson knocked off Gol in the No. 3 contest (6-1, 6-4) and Abbey Walker handed Brooke Walter a 6-2, 6-2 setback at No. 4.
Virginia Tech completed the singles sweep with Jessica Brouwer's 6-2, 6-2 win over Soler at No. 5, and Natalie Kretzer's 6-3, 6-4 outcome with Hannah Priest at No. 6.
In doubles action, ECU's Borges and Gol turned in the Lady Pirates' only win of the match by earning an 8-4 decision over Bethan James and Karina Porushkevich at No. 3.
East Carolina (6-3) will return to action Wednesday when it travels to Buies Creek for a 1:30 p.m. match at Campbell.
