GREENVILLE, N.C.--Five Lady Pirates scored in double figures as East Carolina defeated Memphis 79-57 Saturday afternoon in Minges Coliseum. The Lady Pirates are now 10-13 on the year, 5-5 in Conference USA. Memphis falls to 3-21, 0-10 in league play.
ECU raced out to the early 8-0 lead on back to back three-pointers by Gabriela Husarova and Jessica Slack. Memphis responded, scoring five unanswered, including a trey by Devin Necaise to pull within three, 8-5, with 17:50 on the clock. Necaise's second three pointer at the 16:20 mark cut the Lady Pirate lead to two, 10-8, but a Nicole Days layup followed by a Jasmine Young steal and layup put ECU back up by five, 14-8, at the first media timeout. The Lady Pirates extended their lead to eight on a 4-2 run, capped off by an Impris Manning jumper at the 10:20 mark. Young's trey with 9:09 remaining in the half increased ECU's lead to 10, 24-14. A steal by Terry led to a fastbreak layup by Husarova, giving the Lady Pirates their largest lead of the game, 28-14, with 8:09 to play. Jazmyn Green's three-pointer with 5:40 on the clock ended a 13-0 ECU run, making the score 34-17. The Tigers put together a 10-2 run over the next three minutes, cutting ECU's lead down to 12, 36-24 with 2:44 on the clock. A Necaise three with 25 seconds to play made the halftime score 38-27 in favor of the Lady Pirates.
Necaise led all scorers with 13 at the break, while Terry led the Lady Pirates with seven. ECU out rebounded the Tigers 22-16 and forced 17 Memphis turnovers, resulting in 21 points for the Lady Pirates.
ECU began the second half on a 6-0 run, giving the Lady Pirates the 44-29 advantage with 19:06 to play in the game. The Tigers chipped away at the lead, going on a 5-0 run, cutting the lead to 14, 50-36, with under 14 to play. ECU continued to roll, however, putting together a 12-2 run over the next five minutes, increasing its lead to 22, 60-38, at the under 12 media timeout. The Lady Pirates rolled to the 79-57 victory.
Mills led the Lady Pirates with 15 points and six rebounds. Young finished the night with nine points and a season-high 10 assists. Days finished the day with a season-best 10 points and was two rebounds shy of a double-double with eight boards. Manning and Terry each tallied 11 points while Slack also scored in double figures with 10. Erica Crumlin tallied a career-best four points on the day as well. Necaise led the Tigers with 13 points, all coming in the first half.
East Carolina hits the road this weekend, first traveling to Dallas, Texas for a Friday evening tilt against SMU. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 p.m. From there, the Lady Pirates will travel to Tulsa, Okla. for a nationally televised game against the Hurricane on ESPN 2. Tip-off Sunday is set for 5:30 p.m.
