
Mills Leads East Carolina to 70-58 Win at SMU

DALLAS, Texas--Cherie Mills pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds and added 18 points for her fourth double-double of the season leading the Lady Pirates to a 70-58 win over SMU Friday evening at Moody Coliseum. With the win, East Carolina improves to 11-13 on the year, 6-5 in Conference USA action. SMU falls to 13-10, 5-6 in league play.
After three lead changes in the first 11:27, an 8-0 run by East Carolina put the Lady Pirates up 17-11 with 8:12 to play in the first half. A Katy Cobb trey ended the run and cut the ECU lead to three, 17-14, at the 7:39 mark. Jasmine Young's layup extended ECU's lead to five, 19-14, but a 4-0 SMU run pulled the Mustangs within one, 19-18. A Sharee Shepherd basket with 5:44 to play gave SMU its last lead of the game, 20-19. Impris Manning's jumper at the 4:50 mark put East Carolina back on top for good, 21-20. Manning's basket sparked an 18-2 ECU run, increasing their lead to 15, 37-22 at the break. The Lady Pirates did not allow an SMU field goal in the final 5:44 of the half.
LaCoya Terry led ECU with nine points while Mills had eight points and eight rebounds. ECU shot 53.1 percent while holding SMU to just 23.7 percent.
SMU used a 5-0 run early in the second to pull within nine, 40-31, with 14:49 to play. East Carolina extended its lead to as many as 19 points, 55-36, at the 6:28 mark. SMU did not take advantage of being in the free throw bonus early, missing free throws shooting under 60% from the charity stripe (8-of-14). The Lady Pirates cruised to the 70-58 win.
Mills led all scorers with 18 points and a personal-best 16 rebounds. The double-double was her 13th of her career, fourth of the season. Terry also scored in double figures, with 16 points, adding seven rebounds and seven assists.
East Carolina now travels to Tulsa, Okla. for a nationally televised game against the Hurricane on ESPN 2. Tip-off Sunday is set for 5:30 p.m.
