
Owls Beat Pirates 4-0 In Series Opener

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Ryan Berry struck out a career-high 12 batters in seven innings as the Rice Owls snapped East Carolina's 14-game home winning streak Friday night 4-0 inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Berry, a freshman from Humble, Texas who improved to 5-1 on the year, did not allow a walk on the night. Ryan Tacker pitched two innings allowing one hit with one strikeout.
Pirate (21-10, 4-3) starter T.J. Hose went five innings, allowed three runs (all earned) on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts and fell to 4-4. Josh Ruhlman faced two batters in the fifth, recording a ground out and fly out before Mike Flye came in to finish the inning. Flye went 3 1/3 innings giving up one run on one hit with three walks and one punchout.
Rice (24-10, 6-1) took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth on Jordan Dodson's fielder's choice that scored Brian Friday. Friday roped a one-out double to left center then moved over to third on Diego Seastrunk's single to right, setting up the games first run.
ECU was held to five hits on the night with Dale Mollenhauer, Ryan Tousley, Brandon Henderson, Jake Dean and Ryan Wood each collecting base knocks.
The Owls pushed their lead to three, 3-0, on Derek Myers sac fly to right field that scored Aaron Luna. Luna drove in the first run of the frame with a double to left center that scored Joe Savery.
Jared Gayhart drove in the Owls fourth run of the night in the seventh on a foul fly out down the left field line that scored Dodson putting the score at 4-0.
ECU and Rice will meet in game two of the three-game series Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
