Women's Tennis Adds Gordon To Program

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Kristin Gordon, a four-year letterwinner and co-captain for John Handley High School who compiled 140 combined singles and doubles victories during her prep career, has declared her commitment to attend and play tennis at East Carolina University beginning this fall according to an announcement from head women's tennis coach Tom Morris Thursday.
Gordon, who earned a final No. 7 United States Tennis Association (USTA) 16 & Under ranking in the state of Virginia, posted four consecutive district singles and doubles titles for coach Terry Ewell at JHHS. As a junior in 2006, she helped lead her squad to a state semifinals appearance after advancing to the regional finals in doubles play.
"We are extremely excited to have Kristin commit to play tennis at ECU next year," Morris said. "In the past few seasons, we have built a very solid foundation around players like Kristin, and with her decision to come to East Carolina, we will continue to build a better program in the next four years. Our whole team was very excited to hear that Kristin has committed to ECU and we are looking forward to having her in our program."
A two-time player-of-the-year selection by the Northern Virginia Daily and Winchester Star, Gordon posted a four-year singles mark of 74-9 and a doubles record of 66-6 which included regional qualification as a freshman, sophomore and junior.
"Kristin has a very solid all-around game, strong volleys and overheads, and a strong baseline game," Morris added. "Her work ethic, both on the tennis court and in the classroom, will have a solid impact on our program and school."
Gordon also excelled in the classroom, earning selection to the National Honor Society while maintaining a 4.617 grade point average during her first seven semesters of high school work.
The Lady Pirates closed out the 2007 campaign with a 19-10 dual match record, equaling a program single-season standard for victories which was set a year earlier. In fact, since taking over the ECU women's tennis program in 1999, Morris has now matched or surpassed the record on four occasions (16 in 2003, 17 in 2005 and 19 in 2006 and 2007).
