
Gol Earns All-Conference USA Honors

IRVING, Texas - East Carolina junior Mireia Gol earned second-team All-Conference USA honors according to a recent release by the league office. Gol, who turned in the Lady Pirates' top singles record for the second consecutive season after notching 18 triumphs, closed the year by winning eight straight matches which helped ECU post its third consecutive record-breaking or tying win total.
In addition, Conference USA also announced its complete 2007 All-Conference first, second and third teams along with post-season award winners, as selected by the conference's head coaches. Marshall sophomore Kellie Schmitt earned C-USA Player-of-the-Year and all-league first-team recognition. Schmitt is currently C-USA's only ranked singles player, coming in at No. 75 in the latest FILA/ITA rankings. Tulsa head coach Dean Orford, was named Coach of the Year after leading his team to its first conference championship in program history and third overall NCAA appearance.
The Lady Pirates completed their season with a 19-10 record, which followed school-standard marks of 17-9 in 2005 and 19-9 in 2006.

Turned in East Carolina's top singles record for the second consecutive year, booking an 18-4 spring mark which included a season-ending eight-match win streak ... A high-impact player who has keyed the Lady Pirates' three consecutive record-breaking or tying win totals (17-9 in 2005, 19-9 in 2006 and 19-10 in 2007) ... Was 7-0 when playing at the No. 1 (1-0) and No. 2 (6-0) positions while posting an 11-3 ledger at No. 3 ... Won only C-USA regular season match played in (defeated Houston's Sonja Nikolic 6-0, 6-1 on March 23) ... In all, won 14 of her last 16 singles matches ... Was leading UCF's Kenza Belbacha 6-0, 5-4 in the C-USA Tourney opener before play was halted ... Combined with three doubles partners for a 16-6 record - was 7-4 with Varinia Soler, 6-2 with Luiza Borges and 3-0 with Hannah Priest ... Opened campaign with wins in 14 of the first 16 doubles matches ... Won only C-USA doubles match played (8-6 with Soler vs. Houston) ... Participated in six singles and seven doubles matches during the fall ... Captured the consolation title of the Flight A2 Singles Bracket at the Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational, cruising past Samford's Anna Jackson (6-2, 6-1) and High Point's Suzanne Celensu (6-2, 6-2) ... Advanced to the title match of the Flight A2 Doubles Bracket with Priest, defeating Liberty (8-4), Richmond (8-6), Charleston Southern (8-5) before falling to N.C. State (8-3) ... Will enter senior season with 69 career singles wins - an average of 23 per season - and a total of 56 doubles victories (19 wpy).
